Protecting your bottom line

Shelf life studies are critical to the success of your company and protection of your brand. Assigning a product shelf life that is too short will cause unnecessary discard of product which can be costly. Conversely, a shelf life that is too long, may lead to unacceptable product appearance and quality resulting in damage your brand.

Things to consider

1) Expiry labeling

Phrases outlined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) can be helpful in determining what labeling to use for your product:

  • “Best if Used By/Before” date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality.
  • A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale and inventory management.
  • A “Use-By” date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality.
